Social Responsibility

Social Responsibility, is an increasingly important issue worldwide. Shakti Cocos has this high esteem especially with regard to working conditions. Therefore our factories in India are certified since July 2012 with SA8000.

SA8000 is a global social standard for respectable working conditions, developed and controlled by Social Accountability International (SAI).

SA8000 is the first auditable certification in this field based on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Convention on the Rights of the Child and various International Labour Organisation (ILO). SA8000 covers the following points:

  • Child labor: No employees under the age of 15 years.
  • Forced labor: No forced labor or slavery.
  • Health and Safety: Provide a safe and healthy working environment, take measures to prevent unsafe situations, regular monitoring of health, safety and training of workers, access to sanitation and clean drinking water.
  • Freedom of Association and right to collective negotiations: Respect the right to join a trade union and the right to collective negotiations.
  • Discrimination: No discrimination based on race, caste, origin, religion, disability, gender, sexual orientation, union, political belief, or age, no sexual intimidation.
  • Discipline: No corporal punishment, mental or physical compulsion and no verbal abuse
  • Working hours: meet the local law, but in any case, not more than 48 hours per week with at least one day off for every seven day period. Overtime is voluntary, paid at a premium rate and not more than 12 hours a week. Overtime may be required as part of a collective agreement.
  • Compensation: Wages paid for a standard working week must meet the legal standards and sufficient for the basic needs of workers and their families, no disciplinary deductions.
